Coffee Culture in Arabia
Coffee is an important part of the Arabic culture. It is
consumed at all meals and also on special occasions
and holidays. The coffee is always ready and waiting
for friends and passersby.
The coffee in Arabia is medium roasted whereas in
Northern Arabia it is a dark roast. The majority of
tribes use cardamom and saffron to enhance the
taste of the coffee and serve it with dates.
The mehbash is an instrument used to grind the
coffee and also plays an important role in welcoming
them into the house. This is achieved by grinding to a
rhythm which can convey happiness or sadness within
the household.
There are normally three pots used to prepare coffee
in Arabic homes; each of the pots serves its own
purpose. The first pot is used to brew the coffee and
is the largest of the three, after brewing the coffee is
stored in a medium sized pot awaiting a guest. When
the guest arrives the coffee is transferred to the
smallest pot for serving. Each region of Arabia has its
own particular coffee pot design.
The coffee is served in small portions in miniature
cups to the guests first and then in order of age.
When the guest does not wish to have another
serving they shake the cup to indicate that they are
finished.

"Coffee has played an important role in Arabic culture for centuries and will continue to do so for many more".
